Belated Birthday Wishes

What do Batman, Dracula, Lost In Space, Oliver Stone, Harry Potter, and the Sex Pistols have in common?

Gary Oldman, who was born on yesterday's date in 1958. From Jim Gordon to the Prince of Wallachia, from Dr. Zachary Smith to Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, from Sirius Black to Sid Vicious, Mr. Oldman always gives a nuanced, memorable, sometimes heartbreaking performance. (I was not nearly as devastated as some by the events of HP and the Order of the Phoenix... until the movie, the bit where Sirius is showing Harry around 12 Grimmauld Place, the mansion of The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black, and puts his hands on Harry's shoulders and says, "When all this is over we'll be a proper family. You'll see" and I fucking lost it, knowing what was coming.)

(And, just for grins and to whet appetites, there's a CGI-performance-capture version of A Christmas Carol coming this November, which has Oldman as Cratchit, Marley, and Tiny Tim. Also Jim Carrey as Scrooge and all the ghosts, and -- in the most perfect casting in the history of film -- Bob Hoskins as Fezziwig.)

What's your favorite Oldman performance?
