But You Get to Have Cake

Hi. Spaff here. A couple of years ago, I invited a bunch of artists to perform their own unique versions of "Hey Birthday Boy," a song I had written for a surprise party for Robert Lund. I received a dozen recordings; all were presented to Robert, some were played for the assembled multitudes, and the whole thing went over very nicely.

Unable to leave well enough alone, I have continued to solicit and receive performances of "Hey Birthday Boy"; I've been stringing the participants along, meanwhile, with the promise that I'll send them a CD collection of all the versions. We're up to 28, so I should probably be satisfied and wrap this up. Tantalizingly, however, there are still some of my favorite dementia artists who have said they are going to chime in, so I'm willing to wait a bit longer. But just a bit.

Meanwhile, Robert has also recorded this uplifting birthday song. It's a parody of George Michael's 1987 uberhit "Faith" with new lyrics by me and vocals, instruments, mixing, etc., by Robert.

Now this is awesome. Beautifully executed... from beginning to end. And I hang my head in shame that I have not yet delivered on my promise to contribute to the Hey Birthday Boy conga line. Spaff... I suck. Could you please send me the tune again? I can't find it. And you guys are just amazing when it comes to this funny music crap. Well done sirs!

Dammit. What a colossally bad time to be having problems with my laptop, which have created problems with my site. I'll try to restore that demo of the song from Jake Waters (it's the only one I had up there). Meanwhile, if any of you who have recorded the song would be so kind as to step in and shoot a copy of it over to Steve Goodie and Max DeGroot, that would be very very helpful. Thanks, all!

I agree with Austin. You should totally check out my version. Not that it's wonderful or anything, but I think I should take advantage of this free publicity that I didn't even have to initiate. And of course, this new song is awesome!

Have another slice on me, Spaff and Lund. I'm definately putting this one out over the air from now on when any of my family members or friends have birthdays.....hell, I might even play it for my 28th birthday coming up next month. I hope I have cake.

Thanks for the comments, guys! In the past 24 hours, I have received a barbershop-quartet version of "Hey Birthday Boy" from Robert Lund and a banjo version from Steve Goodie - as well as a re-commitment from the great Luke Ski. Hooray! We're nearing the home stretch.
