And We're Back! Sorry for the downtime folks. Last Thursday our server stopped responding. I got on a support chat with our host who told us our VPS (virtual private server) needed to be rebooted and things would be back up in about 15 minutes. 15 minutes later the server was responding again, but my more complicated sites—including this one—were now reporting a 500 error, meaning something was configured wrong on the server. I immediately opened a support ticket for my host to look into this. The last time this happened it was because my host upgraded something on the backend that was incompatible with something else I was running and they didn't bother to check their work. I'm guessing they did that again, but I don't know for sure because I have yet to hear back about this still-open ticket.
This was the final straw for this host. They were one of the best in the industry a decade ago when we launched. At some point they were sold to another company and their service has been slowly degrading ever since. My sites have been repeatedly hacked and the host just tells me to change my password, rather than look into how the hackers are getting in and taking steps to prevent it from happening in the future. There has been an increasing amount of downtime, and if I had kept accurate records I'm sure I could call them on their 99.9% uptime guarantee. And when things do go wrong their support, which used to be top-notch, is now barely passable. If I have anything other than the simplest issue for them to handle it often takes days to resolve. So I'm done. I have found a new host and spent the weekend migrating this web site to it.
Everything appears to be up and running again. However, this is a big, complicated web site and I'm sure I missed something, so if you come across something that isn't working properly please send an email to email@example.com and I'll take care of it.
Thank you for your patience, everyone. And I apologize to Nuclear Bubble Wrap who had a very cool song go live while we were down. Do check it out if you haven't heard it yet. Also, be sure to check out last week's episode of The Funny Music Podcast with special guest TV's Kyle. It was a great show and wasn't able to be posted due to the outage.
Now I need to go migrate the rest of my sites... *grumble grumble*
