What The Doctor Ordered A song about and for legendary radio DJ Dr. Demento Lyrics & Vocals: Insane Ian Music: “Pico and Sepulveda” by Felix Figueroa & His Orchestra, as covered by Power Salad, and then sampled by Trevor Morgan 1) When I was a kid I looked up to Weird Al I loved his humor and enjoyed his style But then one day I heard of his mentor With a radio show called Dr Demento I found some albums & I thought they were cool But didn’t hear the show til I got to high school Listened to all the tracks & I got inspired To send the Doc a tape was now required I couldn’t play music tho, my voice was strange (30 years later and not much’s changed) So how could I make my list of parodies? With a game system creating karaoke! Needed a stage name for all of this (‘Cause the hero worship is obvious) Filled a 90 minute tape with songs I recorded But they weren’t quite what the doctor had ordered Chorus: Wind up your radios The Doctor’s why God gave you those Sit down it’s time for the show We love Doctor Demento! 2) It seemed like I needed to hone my craft So I listened to the show & I laughed and laughed At songs by Spike Jones, Devo Spice, Tom Lehrer Ya know I was prone to giggle fits of hysteria In college I started a comedy band Well, three or four, things got out of hand Met a guy at a con named the great Luke Ski Who did songs just like me, but was heard on Dr D! He and his friends had just started The FuMP A comedy collective? You know I was pumped! And soon after that a spark was ignited In the hopes of a song to make the Doctor delighted I whipped up a track (friends helped me sound better) Sent it to the doc, AND I GOT BACK A LETTER! He said it was funny, he laughed and he chortled I finally had what the doctor had ordered! Chorus 3) Over the years I’ve been lucky to say He’s picked quite a few of my songs to play It’s always been fun, even had a number 1 But the Dr D show is ending its run I’ve met lots of friends ‘cause of him, yes it’s true And we wouldn’t be doing this weird thing that we do So Barry, thank you, we’re here cause of you I’m so very lucky that I got to meet you That was truly heartfelt so you know that I meant it We love you! For the FuMP's Tribute to Dr. Demento, I wanted to write an original song about what the good Doctor's show meant to me, and how it has influenced pretty much my whole life. I wouldn't be writing and performing comedy music, I wouldn't have the friends and relationships I have, and I wouldn't be where I am, let alone who I am without his show and his influence. So thank you Barry...all of this is your fault. And I mean that affectionately.
